Phyllis Labanowski

Artist / Creative (Individual)

I am an art worker. I use the arts to build community, to work toward social justice, and to support others who are doing the same. All of my current work draws on my past lives: as an educator (I was a public school teacher for 12 years) and as an activist (I worked nationally with educators, other activists and community organizers for another 15 years.) I also volunteer time mentoring emerging artists and other cultural creatives. My work includes the following 4 tracks. I run a graphic messaging business for people and non-profits that are trying to do good work in the world. I co-direct several programs at The Art Garden, an intergenerational, community art-making space in Shelburne Falls. I collaborate with other artists, musicians, playwrights, farmers, etc. and co-create public installations, performances, and contemporary, public ceremonies in response to civic and social justice issues. I make altars and portable shrines from objects that are rescued, found, and acquired.
