I was raised in a political family in Washington, D.C. I attended the Corcoran Gallery art school and began undergraduate work at Cornell University in the School of Fine Arts. I moved to California in 1966 to study at the San Francisco Art Institute and UC-Berkeley. I participated in the Berkeley-San Francisco music and arts counterculture, and was heavily involved in political journalism. I took my Master’s in Public Policy at UC Berkeley and worked as a federal fisheries biologist, and as a regulatory analyst for EPA, and for the California Public Utilities Commission. I've been a journalist and author, a lobbyist and an activist for environmental and social justice issues. Between 1998 and 2021 I volunteered with federal and local agencies dealing with endangered coho salmon..

I now find my best contribution to the world is in wildlife and nature photography and in writing about nature and wildlife. It is my daily practice to photograph wildlife in my immediate environment, to get to know and be known by the creatures in the natural community in which I live. I also travel sustainably to practice photography. I post photos daily on social media, to provide people a moment of recognition of the natural world.
Nature needs us, and we need nature, more so every day. The earth and its nets of ecosystems that keep us alive are overused and abused, By their loss we lose too. But by their restoration to wellbeing, we restore our connection to nature, and what we give our children and their children. I find that the greatest joy in the world is in restoring the earth. To that end, I follow the Society for Ecological Restoration and Rewilding Europe.
In August 2021 my husband and I left California and moved to the Pioneer Valley, Massachusetts. Since our arrival, I have published a small book of photographs entitled "Trees," I plan further books, on water, creatures, and manmades. I look forward to expanding my service here in the place Paul Simon called "Sweet New England."
