Kathryn Fanelli practices an art that merges the visual language and spiritual nature of Suminagashi with a minfulness based discipline. Ego, intentionality and controled markmaking are replaced with the notion that to the allow the inherent nature of materials to be what they are will shape the artists mind. There are worlds beyond worlds within if one can slow the mind/body and pay close attention to the elemental. It's a way to heighten sensory systems and visual awareness. My "Unfolding Terrain" series describes the effects that are reflected in these mind states. I'm very interested in ways of looking at energy presented behind phenomena. behind unseen constructs of our making and pulling them to the surface, like scrying. The physical processes occur with the use of paint, ink, minerals, water, printmaking, photography and objects. The neurobiological explorations of lucid dreaming, mediumship, yogic disciplines and neurophysiological systems link my work.
