I am a visual artist who creates ceramic sculpture, primarily heads.
My sculptures can be gritty and disturbing, strange and beautiful. They are made from my dreams and introspection just before I wake. Getting lost in creating is my favorite way to surprise myself and grow. I create work that first moves me, and hopefully can also surprise and delight the viewer.
I handbuild my sculptures using the coil method. Primarily using my hands and a few tools. My self-portraits are well made but I enjoy pushing my skill level. I use several clay bodies, different firing methods including wood firing. I think of the head as a vessel, that holds inside history, events, dreams and desires. I have a passion for travel, soaking up history. I have done a five week artist residency in Vallauis, France, taken a workshop in San Miguel Allende, Mexico that centered on Dia De Los Muertos. Most recently with the support of a Marie Boschen Porter artist grant I was able to go to Sicily and do research.
