Small Town Film Series: Dazed and Confused

Date/Time

Location

The Clark Art Institute (225 South Street, Williamstown, MA 01267, Williamstown MA)

The Clark presents a series of films highlighting the charm of small towns.

The series continues with "Dazed and Confused" (1993). It is the last day of school at a Texas high school in 1976, and the one house party of the night has been cancelled. Interconnected groups of teenagers find ways to fill the stretch of time before dawn, which mirrors the liminality of their own lives. Meandering and charming, "Dazed and Confused" lacks a central plot, instead privileging mood. Richard Linklater casts local youth—including Matthew McConaughey in his first role—and borrows names and characters from his own childhood in Huntsville, Texas. The result is a film that deftly captures the feeling of adolescence as it is remembered, not necessarily experienced. (Run time: 1 hour, 43 minutes)
