Original music, joyous and warm, sophisticated yet emotionally direct. A sound steeped in jazz, sparkling with rhythms and instruments from the Caribbean, Eastern Europe and the Arabic world. Layers of percussion drive melodies on clarinet, trumpet, and piano. Reviewers describe the sextet as “uproarious and jubilant,” “sweet and strong like sugarcane.” The group is preparing to release its third album, Songbirds of the Deep Sea, on Truth Revolution Records.

Julian Gerstin, percussion, composer, is a veteran of many jazz, Africa and Latin bands. He has appeared with jazz icons Sheila Jordan and Charles Neville; Afropop stars Orlando Julius, Baba Ken Okulolo and Zulu Spear; and has also worked in Eastern European and Arabic music, punk, funk, choral music, and theater composition. Much of the Sextet’s music stems from Julian’s two years living in Martinique, studying and performing with traditional musicians. “I like music that makes you sweat and music that makes you think."

Make sure to save your spot for Gerstin’s percussion workshop before the show at 3:30pm.
