Hampshire College Winter Dance Concert
Date/Time
Location
Music and Dance Building (893 West Street Amherst, MA 01002, Amherst MA)
This year’s concert features collaborative choreography developed in Hampshire College visiting professor and dance artist Lailye Weidman’s Fall 2021 classes "Moving Making Meaning" and "Body Multitudes.” The choreography reflects experiences of coming back into community and moving together amid the continued pandemic—embracing movement as a way to address and transform isolation and fear. Dancers move between solo and ensemble movement, as if rediscovering the way these modes of being can exist simultaneously. Live Accompaniment by Julie Bodian. Other work in the program includes an environmental dance film by Blythe Wilde which is a meditation on place during the pandemic. This piece explores journeys and distance, using walking as a way to connect with and develop a relationship with a place. The film centers on a score Blythe developed which reflects the deep processing she has done on the aforementioned and on the distance her family and her traveled when they moved from Florence, MA to Sechelt, BC in 2020 on a road trip. The concert will also feature a contemporary Hip Hop solo performance by Debbie Ampong inspired by her love for rhythm and the felt experience of being physically moved by music. Lastly, the program includes an improvised composition by interdisciplinary artist Ashley Shey and her guest collaborator.
Tickets are offered for free. Community memebers are welcomed and encouraged to make donations. Donations are greatly appreciated as they go directly to supporting The Hampshire Dance Program.
