Fairy Lie allows us to see what happens when humans and fairies meet. Isabelle is a human girl of about 10 who is lonely at school and at home. She wants friends but doesn’t understand her brother’s advice that she has to MAKE friends, not just wait for them to find her. When everyone is talking about what pet they will bring in on Pet Day, she lies and says she has the best pet of all: a fairy. Humiliated, and knowing she will have to face the other kids on the next day, she wishes on a star that somehow her lie could come true. Unbeknownst to her, the “star” was actually a young fairy named Sylvia. By ancient fairy law, if a human child wishes on a fairy’s light, that wish must be granted, so the fairy council condemns Sylvia to go live as Isabelle’s “fairy companion.” As the human and fairy child get to know and respect each other, each is changed. Isabelle learns how to make and keep friends, and take risks. Their friendship also brings great changes to how the fairies view humans, and how the human children view their role in the care of the earth.
