Evan Arntzen & Matt Munisteri: Parlor Room Conversations

There’s always something special about two master jazz improvisers conversing on a “topic” (song) from their easy chairs without much of a plan to muck up the works. Matt Munisteri and Evan Arntzen have more than a decade of history playing together with the EarRegulars and the Catherine Russell Band. This will mark their debut as a duo.

Come and get comfy in the Parlor Room as Matt and Evan discuss a set of old chestnuts, using their instruments and their voices, with a fierce groove and swing. The conversation will be scintillating.

Born into a family of musicians, Evan Arntzen was given a clarinet at age seven and began learning timeless blues melodies by the likes of Sidney Bechet and Louis Armstrong from his grandfather. He has since developed his own expressive voice as a clarinetist, saxophonist and vocalist, which Grammy Award winning jazz writer Ricky Riccardi calls “the very definition of timeless.”

It’s a daunting task, this business of encapsulating Matt Munisteri’s musical self. As the sparkling guitarist on several chart-topping jazz CDs; a critically lauded songwriter and nimble lyricist; an urban banjo-warrior and a sometime session musician; a selfless and devoted sideman; a wry-yet-honest singer; an engaging and winning front-man; and an arranger whose ear-pulling re-inventions of well-traveled songs have contributed to Grammy winning CDs for artists such as Loudon Wainwright and Catherine Russell, Matt’s various dueling career paths might at first seem difficult to reconcile.
