Ekphrastic Storytelling: Tarot & Your Poetic Voice

Ekphrastic poetry is a vivid description of a scene or, more commonly, a work of art. It is an act of stepping into the seen and unseen, the known and unknown, and using our imagination to alchemize our experience into a new shape through words.

Tarot started as simply a deck of playing cards in Europe, and throughout centuries transformed into ornate decks full of powerful archetypes and immense cultural significance. What began from a game, has expanded into thousands upon thousands of decks and inspired art, writing, music, and more. Tarot has become a tool that offers us a reflection into minds, hearts, and souls. Tarot has become an invitation to immerse ourselves in stories of past, present, and future. Both individual and collective. Temporary and eternal.

Together, tarot and ekphrastic poetry offer us a unique pathway into finding our own creative voice. In this workshop, we’ll use the imagery of tarot as a source of inspiration explore a few different poetry writing prompts together. There will potentially be time to share our writing together if that is of interest.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll hopefully leave with a renewed sense of inspiration and a deeper connection to your poetic voice. You do not need to have your own tarot deck to participate (there are FREE digital ways of accessing tarot). All you need to bring is yourself and your favorite way to write!
