Edith Wharton and American Gardens

Date/Time

Location

The Mount (2 Plunkett St., Lenox, MA 01240, Lenox MA)

Landscape architect CeCe Haydock will give a talk on Europe Transplanted — on Edith Wharton, a life-long European traveler, and her influenceon American garden design.

Wharton influenced gardening across the country in several ways: her writing, including her pivotal book Italian Villas and their Gardens (1904), her gardens, most notably The Mount in Lenox, and her close friendships with her niece, the landscape architect Beatrix Farrand, and other garden experts.

In this lecture, Haydock will show how Wharton’s classical education informed her theories of traditional garden design. And through her travels, her writing, and her friendships with serious garden designers and horticulturists, she developed a reputation as a respected critic and practitioner of classical garden design. Even though she spent the second half of her life abroad, her influence in the United States is still recognized today.
