Comedy Cause is a signature fundraising initiative launched by local comedian Tim Lovett with his organization Comedy as a Weapon in 2017. The show brings top comedic talent from across the country to perform in Western Massachusetts and raise money for a local cause. The theme for this year’s benefit “Teacher’s Night Out!” and proceeds will support The Literacy Project, a Western Massachusetts-based non-profit that offers free basic education and high school equivalency classes to adults.
Atlanta-based comedian Hank Denson will headline the show, which takes place on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at the Academy of Music in Downtown Northampton. Denson has opened for Jamie Foxx, Cedric the Entertainer, Amy Schumer, and Rodney Perry. He appeared in Barbershop 3 and will appear in All Eyes on Me, the forthcoming Tupoc biopic. Denson has also been featured on the Chappelle Show and is best known for his #payteachersmore movement.
Comedians Kim “Boney” Deshields and Maya Manion will also take the stage. DeShields was a semifinalist on Nick At Nite’s Funniest Mom and a contestant on Last Comic Standing and Ladies of Laughter. She has opened for Tracey Morgan, Bill Burr, Leslie Jones, Mike Epps, Nikki Carr, and Arnez J. Manion is a mother of three and was featured on Nick at Nite’s Funniest Mom in American. She is based in Middletown, Rhode Island and performs stand up comedy all around the country.
