Braiding Sweetgrass: Community book club

Date/Time

Location

Williams College (880 Main St., Williamstown, MA 01267, Williamstown MA)

The Williams College Davis Center and Claiming Williams invite the whole community to join in reading, reflecting, connecting and activating the lessons of Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants, by renowned botanist and Indigenous scholar Robin Wall Kimmerer, 2022 MacArthur Genius Award Winner.

Robin Wall Kimmerer is coming to Williamstown on Thursday, February 6, to be the evening keynote speaker and celebrate Claiming Williams, and the college invites everyone to read her book, the DC says, and help welcome her with great enthusiasm and gratitude.

Just come by the DC (30 Morely) around noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays in January. Each session will be a stand alone session, so don’t feel like you must attend every one … thought it’d be cool if you did!

The first reading/section, on Tuesday, January 7, read will be the chapter Maple Nation: A Citizenship Guide, pages 167 to 174. This book group is ever-evolving, and it’ will look at what the folk who gather want as to what the next week’s readings/themes will be.

WHEN: Every Tues & Thurs in January, noon to 1pm

WHAT: Braiding Sweetgrass, ASYNCHRONOUS Book Club (come to one, come to many, like the book, each will stand on their own as content or be seen as part of the bigger story)

WHERE: Davis Center Main Multipurpose/BIG room: 30 Morley Drive (big, new, black, jagged building with plenty of glass)

WHY: because it’s great to connect with others!! How do we incorporate the lessons of RWK’s book into our lives?!

WHO: you! your neighbors, your coworkers, your friends, a few family members…this is for ALL LOCAL COMMUNITY MEMBERS–at Williams College or not….

DEETS: “Each week/session will stand on it’s own, and you do NOT need to attend all to get something out of this book club. We will be grateful for whatever meetings you CAN come to! They are all at noon and at the Davis Center. The DC is not supplying food, please run by the dining hall, pack a lunch, eat after 1pm or pick up something from a local vendor if you need to eat then…there will be a few little snacks or hot beverages, but this book club isn’t about eating: it’s about reading.

“This will be one of a few book clubs that will be forming over the next few weeks and be ready to share the revelations and lessons of Braiding Sweetgrass, Gathering Moss and/or The Serviceberry. We will keep you posted! Thanks for your interest!”
