The StillCan Band, offered as part of the Creative Aging program at CMSS, is a beginner concert band for adults aged 55 and up. This ensemble is a great way to explore a new instrument or dig deeper into a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument you already play. The positive, social rehearsals offer opportunities to learn alongside, and practice playing with other beginning musicians with little-to-no formal music training. The StillCan Band will be led this year by Zach Robarge, a woodwinds teacher at CMSS. Zach has experience in many different types of classical and jazz ensembles, and is excited to work with the group on the music that is most interesting to all the participants!
Community Music School of Springfield, founded in 1983, is a non-profit community arts school. Their mission is to provide an equitable and inclusive center of excellence in music education that empowers individuals, inspires creative passion, and promotes well-being in our greater community.
In order to meet the needs and interests of the 55+ community, the school launched a Creative Aging program, facilitated by CMSS faculty Liz Simmons. For the past four years, they have brought music classes to fourteen retirement homes and senior centers in the greater Springfield area, and currently offer two classes for 55+ at the Music School: “Joyful Voices Chorus”, and “StillCan Band”.
